What is a clean room?
A clean room is climate and dust controlled environments. At Revoco Limited we have a certified Class 100 clean room, this means it is designed to never allow more than 100 particles (0.5 microns or larger) in a space of 1 cubic foot or 29 particles in a space of 1 Meter cube of air.
What is a micron?
A "micron" is an abbreviated term for "micrometer", or a millionth of a meter (1/1,000,000 meters). This is about 0.00004 inches. Lets do some size comparisons, a human red blood cell is about 5 microns across. A human hair is about 75 microns across (of course this depends on the person). Bacteria can be between about .2 microns and 3 microns in size.
How does this affect the Hard Drive ?
In the picture you will see the inside of a hard drive, we have pointed out the hard drive heads that read/writes data and the platter that stores your data.
There is one golden rule, the hard drive heads cannot touch the platter, else your data will be destroyed. To prevent this the heads glides on a layer of air, creating a gap of 0.003 micron between the heads and the platter.
This means that the heads can collide with the platter, with an obstruction as thin as a fingerprint or a particle of smoke.
